As a twenty-five year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 25, Councilman Gene Parrington has served as a journeyman, foreman, officer, executive board secretary and business representative. To his role as a Town Board member, Councilman Parrington brings a unique blend of leadership and administrative experience acquired through formal training and studies, and hands on experience in difficult situations regarding labor and management.

Councilman Parrington attended the National Labor College in Silver Springs, Maryland where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Leadership and Administration. Additionally, he has been an active student at Cornell University's Labor Law Studies program, where he has earned many certifications.

Councilman Parrington is a Vietnam Veteran, who served in the United States Marine Corps from 1967 to 1970. While serving as an Infantry Squad Leader, he received numerous combat medals, including the Purple Heart.

Councilman Parrington has been an active volunteer for several special projects, providing electrical work at the TWA Flight 800 Memorial at Smith Point Park, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Bald Hill and most recently, the 9/11 Memorial at Eisenhower Park. Since taking office in January of 2008, Councilman Parrington has:

  • Hosted a seeing off ceremony for family members of the Fighting 69th Nation Guard at Long Island MacArthur Airport.
  • Partnered with Southwest Airlines to secure tickets to a deployment ceremony in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, for family members of Fighting 69th soldiers.
  • Worked with YES (Youth Enrichment Services) to provide a clean-up at a Fighting 69th soldier’s home while he was serving his country overseas.
  • Established a Food Pantry for the Fighting 69th National Guard
  • Sponsored legislation that renewed an agreement between the Town of Islip and Suffolk County regarding the Suffolk Work EmploymentProgram. SWEP gives employment services, such as cleaning Town parks and facilities, to those who receive public assistance or food stamps from the Suffolk County Department of Social Services, and has proven to be a benefit to both the Town and County.
  • Created “Important Town of Islip Phone Numbers” cards for distribution to Town residents.
  • Responsible for improvements to various town parks with a focus in Brentwood and Central Islip for 2008.
  • Sponsored legislation for a partnership with the Bay Shore Beautification Society for the beautification of a parcel of Town owned property in Bay Shore.
  • Helped various organizations to improve their neighborhood watch programs.
  • Established Islip’s first Veteran’s Service Organization and hot line. (631) 244-VETS or www.islipvso.org.
  • Worked with the Town of Islip Housing Authority to increase accessibility to affordable housing for seniors.
  • Facilitated the cleanup of multiple polluted and littered areas throughout the Town.

Councilman Parrington is the Town Board Liaison to the Department of Human Services, including Senior and Veteran Affairs, and the Department of Parks and Recreation. He also serves as a member of the Islip Resource Recovery Agency, Islip Industrial Development Agency, and the Town of Islip Empire Zone Administrative Board.

In his first year of office, Councilman Parrington has worked closely with Community and Civic organizations to better quality of life throughout the Town of Islip. He will continue to hold an open door policy for anyone who wishes to meet with him at his office in Oakdale, and to fight on behalf of the taxpayers that he represents.

Councilman Parrington's family has resided in the Town of Islip for nearly a century. He lives in Sayville with his wife, Starr, and their three children, Valene, Casey and Sean.
