The Division of Services to the Disabled is responsible for stimulating, promoting, encouraging, and advancing the rights of Islip’s disabled residents. The Division serves as an advocate for disabled persons needing assistance, while providing comprehensive information and referrals to the disabled and their families.
DISABLED SUMMER EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM: This unique program operates for six weeks during the months of July and August. Eligible disabled residents, 16 years of age and over, are offered varied employment opportunities throughout the Islip Town Government.
DISABLED PARKING PERMITS: The Division of Services to the Disabled is the local issuing agent for the New York State Special Vehicle Identification Permit. Permanent or Temporary Permits are issued to individuals with severe mobility impairments. This special permit allows the bearer to park his/her vehicle at posted disabled parking spaces in certain off-street public parking spaces or wherever similar spaces are established on public roads or highways. There are two sections on the permit application; one for the applicant and one for the physician to complete with medical information. TRANSPORTATION SERVICE: This service is offered to eligible disabled residents below the age of 60, traveling to doctor appointments, shopping facilities, and government services within the Town of Islip. For eligibility an applicant must have a current handicapped parking permit. You can download and print the Disabled Accessable Van Transportion Application (see FORMS section), and mail to the Division of Services to the Disabled.
SITE SURVEYS: The Division performs site surveys, upon request, of any business which provides goods and services that may be in violation of Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). ADA requires that all privately owned places of public accommodation be accessible to individuals with disabilities.
TTY SERVICE: (Telecommunication Device for the Deaf) To better serve individuals who are deaf or hearing impaired, the Town of Islip has a TTY Service. Individuals needing to contact either the Division of Services to the Disabled or Therapeutic Recreation may call our TTY number at 224-5397. We can also relay messages to other Town Departments.
THERAPEUTIC RECREATION: (631) 224-5312 (VOICE) OR (631) 224-5397 (TTY) The Therapeutic Recreation Program is designed to provide adapted community based recreational programs for Islip Town residents with disabilities. This program encompasses a broad area of year-round and seasonal activities tailored to meet the varying social and recreational needs of Islip’s residents with disabilities.
FALL/WINTER/SPRING ACTIVITIES: Special Population Swim Program at the YMCA: Fun and socialization in an indoor swimming pool setting. Available to children, teens and adults.
“Fright Night” Halloween Party/Dance: Wear your most creative costume to an evening of dance and raffles. Snacks and drinks will be served. The evening will be capped off with a dance and costume contest. Open to disabled residents 15 years of age and older.
Annual Holiday Party: The Therapeutic Recreation Program provides an annual Holiday Party for children and teenagers to enjoy. Festivities will include singing Holiday songs and receiving a present from Santa.
YEAR-ROUND ACTIVITIES: East Islip Lanes, East Islip: Bowling instruction and friendly competition sanctioned by the Young American Bowling Alliance. Open to individuals, ages six and older, who are physically, emotionally and cognitively challenged.
Modern Dance Program: This program is offered at David Sanders Dance Dynamics in Oakdale. Participants will receive modern dance lessons and will participate in recital performances. Open to the developmentally disabled, from ages six through 21 years of age. You can download and print the Theraputic Recreation Dance Application (see FORMS section), and mail to the Division of Service to the Disabled.
Adult Day Care Program: Social model program designed for developmentally disabled adults, ages 45 years and older. Individual and group activities offered. Transportation, lunch and snacks are provided. A pre-screening interview is necessary.
SUMMER ACTIVITIES: Disabled Summer Playground Program: Designed to mainstream disabled children into the Town’s day camp programs along with non-disabled children in a structured setting. Participants will engage in age appropriate crafts, music, sports, trips and special activities. Open to children six years through 12 years of age. Call (631) 224-5312 to request an application.
