Islip, NY – Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci met with Commissioner Eric Hofmeister at the Town’s compost facility to examine the Town’s disposal of Christmas trees.

The Town’s Environmental Department recently collected approximately 450 tons (900,000 lbs) of Christmas trees during the two-week collection period.

“Our Environmental Department has done an outstanding job collecting and processing the trees of residents,” says Supervisor Croci. “To collect material from 78,890 residences in a short period, keeps our roads clear from debris and is what our residents expect from our Town.”

The trees are processed at the Town’s compost facility at Long Island – MacArthur Airport, where the trees are broken-down into mulch. The mulch is then made available to residents at no charge, or sold to commercial entities and businesses.
