Supervisor Croci Inspects Town’s Preparations for Winter Weather

Islip, NY – Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci recently met with Department of Public Works personnel to inspect the Town’s preparations for anticipated snowfall in 2012.
Supervisor Croci, as well as Public Works Commissioner Thomas Owens, are taking action to ensure the Town is poised to respond to weather events and ensure our residents are able to drive on the safest and cleanest roads.
Thus far, the Town of Islip has stockpiled 5,300 tons of salt, 12,000 cubic yards of sand, and 5,500 cubic yards of a sand/salt mixture. Depending on the severity of a storm, up to 139 Town-owned plows and sanders can be deployed, as well as an additional 165 privately-owned plows.
One of the Town’s more innovative snow-preparedness tactics involves using 11 container trucks to spread a liquid solution, referred to as brine, on major roads before any snowfall reaches Islip. If given enough advance warning, all roads could potentially be treated.
This particular brine solution can dissolve several inches of snow, delaying the accumulation of snow on our roads. Less sand and salt will be needed on Islip’s roadways this winter, which saves taxpayer dollars.
In addition, the Town’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is ready and equipped to track all Town vehicles, and re-route them to more severe areas if necessary. During a storm, the EOC will be fully staffed with Town employees, ready to handle calls from residents who require assistance.
“Your Town of Islip team will be ready when a storm hits,” added Supervisor Croci.
