Allegiant is the second airline this year to take advantage of the multitude of benefits available to airlines operating from MacArthur. On July 25th, Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci and Board Members celebrated the inaugural nonstop flight of PenAir – an Alaskan based airline -- from Islip to Boston. Officials from Allegiant and PenAir have chosen MacArthur Airport to expand their markets, for the first time, into the New York Metropolitan market, thanks in large part to the recent efforts of the current administration to make MacArthur a more viable and competitive airport---efforts that include implementing an airport incentive development plan, airport infrastructure improvements, and an updated Airport Master Plan that reflects a new direction.
“New Yorkers love a great deal,” said Jude Bricker, Senior Vice President of Planning for Allegiant, during the announcement that was made in the main atrium of MacArthur. He was joined by Councilmembers Trish Bergin Weichbrodt, Steve Flotteron, John Cochrane, Anthony Senft and state and local officials. “We think our low fares and special package rates on hotels and rental cars will appeal to travelers looking to spend less on their vacations.”
“MacArthur Airport is an extremely important resource for Islip Town, and the entire Long Island region,” noted Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt. “The Town Board appreciates the airport’s economic significance, realizing that it generates hundreds of thousands of dollars on an annual basis, while providing thousands of jobs both at and beyond the airport. We are committed to doing what is necessary to reverse its recent downward trend.”
Kevin S. Law, President & CEO of the Long Island Association congratulated Town officials and Allegiant executives. “Long Island MacArthur Airport is an economic engine that that is vital to the growth of our business community and thus I commend Supervisor Croci and the Town Board for adding another airline and a new destination through its partnership with Allegiant.”
Allegiant is a Las Vegas based travel company that links passengers living in small cities to world-class leisure destinations. The company’s philosophy is to provide leisure travel that is affordable and convenient. Long Islanders can fly Allegiant from Islip to Ft. Myers/Punta Gorda for a Florida respite. MacArthur’s catchment area has high median incomes with averages ranging from $79,000 - $123,000, far above New York State and U.S. averages and a perfect market for leisure travelers.
Allegiant plans to operate two nonstop flights a week – Mondays and Fridays – at 6:15 p.m., on aircraft that will carry up to 166 passengers and will offer an initial introductory fare of $99 roundtrip, and then $69 one way from ISP to Punta Gorda.
“We are pleased to welcome Allegiant to the MacArthur family,” said Councilman Steve Flotteron. “Their presence at the airport provides Long Island’s travelers with yet another destination option, whether for leisure of business. Florida’s West Coast has been underserved; Allegiant’s arrival will help our residents get to an extremely popular destination without having to use another, less convenient, congested airport.”
